THE IMPORTANCE OF PERSONAL ESSAY (The Lost Generation, Technology, Recession)
I am being called to write a series of personal essays about the very unique experiences of my life and of my generation. For example, I tried winning back an ex through a series of texts because that is the only way he will communicate. I am writing this blog on my cell phone because it was more convenient than fixing the wireless connection on my computer. Not to mention, that I obsessively check Facebook to see which old acquaintences are married off or further along in their careers than I am. Technology isn’t the only thing that has influenced our generation.
Good coined our generation, the Lost Generation, as no longer does the formula that we were brought up to believe in apply. We played our cards right, studied hard, graduated from a respectable college and now the unemployment rate among workers with a college degree is the highest it has ever been in history. I just attended my ten year high school reunion and most of the class is enrolled in law school because they don’t know what else to do. Meanwhile, overqualified lawyers with decades of experience are applying for entry level positions at Legal Aid Society because the market is flooded with talent. I am describing activities and events that have become normalized over the past couple of years, but were unprecedented before now. We are the generation that remembers when there was no internet and now will not leave home without our smartphone. It is important to document how the ever evolving world has impacted our lives; how technology, media and the decisions of our elders has altered the course of our existence and the unique predicaments we face today that never existed before. All of this told, of course, through my oddly endearing and perhaps self-depricating filter.
